Graduate Certificate

UNC-CH students working toward a graduate degree (not counting the REEES Concentration in the Global Studies MA Program) can earn a Graduate Certificate in Russian, Eurasian, and East European Studies, thereby documenting their specialization in the region.

Certificate Requirements

• Minimum of two semesters in residence at UNC-CH
• Thesis, dissertation, or a major research project on a topic related to Russian, Eurasian, and East European Studies
• Demonstrated professional competence in a language from the region
• Four graduate courses on Russian, Eurasian, and East European topics, at least two of which must be taken outside the student’s home department (up to two language courses at the 400-level and above may count toward this requirement)
• Submission of Current CV
• Research presentation at a CSEEES event (i.e., participation in REEES thesis and certificate presentations at the end of the spring semester, presentation at Carolina Seminar: Russia and Its Empire, East and West, or another approved public talk)

Process

• Consult with Associate Director Adnan Džumhur, to design a plan for completion of requirements and/or to obtain an application
• Apply for the Graduate Certificate at least two months prior to graduation
• Students who successfully complete all of the above requirements will have the Certificate indicated on their official transcript
